Classic car repair in Tucson, since 1927.
We have been fixing cars on South 6th Avenue since 1927, which means we were here before your '57 Chevy, your '32 Deuce and most of the muscle cars parked in Tucson garages. Carburetors, vintage A/C, custom exhaust, complete rebuilds — the old ways are not a specialty we added. They are just how we started.
Su carro clásico en buenas manos.
A shop older than the cars it works on.
Most shops that advertise classic car work learned it as a second trade. They started on modern cars, bought a scan tool, and picked up carburetors later because a customer asked. McElroys went the other direction. We opened in 1927 as a neighborhood tire shop and worked our way forward through every era of American car — points and condensers, four-barrels, smog pumps, throttle body injection, and eventually OBD-II. Nothing about a vintage engine is unfamiliar territory here.
That history is why The Drive Tucson (101.7 FM) named us their official classic car mechanic, and why we sponsor Drive It or Park It every weekday morning at 7:30. It is also why the cars in our lot on any given week range from a daily-driven Corolla to a frame-up hot rod waiting on an exhaust.
What we handle
- Carburetor rebuilds and tuning — Holley, Edelbrock, Quadrajet, Rochester, Carter. Rebuilt, jetted and set up for Tucson's altitude and heat, not for sea level.
- Vintage A/C conversion and repair — bringing original systems back, or converting them to run modern refrigerant so the car is drivable in July.
- Custom exhaust fabrication — bent and welded in house, sized and routed to your car and your engine. See our custom exhaust work.
- Engine rebuilds and swaps — from a tired original that needs to come apart to a modern drivetrain going into an old body.
- Ignition, fuel and cooling — points-to-electronic conversions, fuel delivery, radiators and fans sized for the desert.
- Brakes, steering and suspension — including drum-to-disc upgrades on cars that were never meant to stop in modern traffic.
- Restoration work — mechanical restoration on cars that are being brought back over time.
Why Tucson is hard on classics — and kind to them
Tucson is one of the best places in the country to own an old car and one of the worst places to neglect one. The dry air that keeps Arizona sheet metal free of the rust that eats Midwest cars is the same air that turns rubber brittle. Hoses, seals, weatherstripping, tyres and wiring insulation all age faster here, and they age quietly — a coolant hose that looks fine can be chalky and hard underneath.
Then there is the heat. A carbureted engine that ran fine in 85°F will vapor lock in a 110°F August, boiling fuel in the line before it reaches the bowl. Cooling systems designed in 1966 for a Michigan summer have no margin left on a Tucson afternoon. And monsoon season pushes fine dust into every air intake, carburetor and filter you own.
None of this is a reason to keep the car in the garage. It is a reason to have it set up by somebody who has been dealing with these exact failures on these exact streets for nearly a century.
What makes our approach different
Plenty of restoration shops will take your car and keep it for two years. That is a legitimate business, but it is not ours. We are a working repair shop — the same bays that rebuild a Quadrajet on Tuesday are doing brakes on a minivan Wednesday morning. Three things follow from that:
- We give the car back. Our work is scoped so you keep driving it, not so it disappears into a corner of a warehouse.
- We think like daily-driver mechanics. When we set up your classic, we set it up to actually be driven in Tucson traffic in summer — cooling, fuel delivery and brakes get judged by that standard.
- We tell you what can wait. Old cars generate long lists. We separate the things that will strand you or hurt you from the things that are simply on the list, and we say which is which.

Bring it in and talk to us
The best first step with an old car is a conversation, not a quote form. Call (520) 623-1921 and tell us what it is, what it is doing, and what you want out of it — a reliable weekend driver, a show car, or something in between. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right shop for that job.
Classic car questions.
Do you work on lowriders?
Yes. Lowriders are part of the fabric of South Tucson and they come through our bays regularly. We handle the mechanical side — engines, brakes, steering, cooling, exhaust and tuning — so the car is safe and reliable to drive to the show, not just to look at.
Can you convert a vintage car's air conditioning to modern refrigerant?
Yes, vintage A/C conversion is one of the services we handle. Original R-12 systems can be converted to run modern refrigerant, which matters a great deal in Tucson where a classic without working air conditioning is a car you only drive four months a year.
Do you fabricate custom exhaust for classic cars?
We bend and weld custom exhaust in house, so the system is built to your car rather than ordered from a catalogue. That matters on modified engines and swapped drivetrains where an off-the-shelf system will not fit or will not sound right.
Are you really the official classic car mechanic of The Drive Tucson?
Yes. McElroys is the official classic car mechanic of The Drive Tucson (101.7 FM) and sponsors Drive It or Park It, which airs weekday mornings at 7:30 AM.
Talk to a real mechanic.
No call centre, no runaround. Tell us what the car is doing and we'll tell you what it needs — and what it doesn't.
