Family Owned · Since 1927

One of the oldest auto repair shops in Tucson.

McElroys opened in 1927 as a neighborhood tire shop on South 6th Avenue. Nearly a century later we are still at the same address, with the same name and the same promise — honest work, fair prices, done right.

Casi 100 años cuidando los carros de nuestra comunidad.

From a tire shop to a Tucson institution.

In 1927 Tucson had a population under 30,000, Speedway was a dirt road, and cars were still novel enough that fixing them was a trade you learned by doing. That is the year McElroys opened its doors on South 6th Avenue selling and repairing tires.

The shop grew the way the city did — gradually, then all at once. Tires became brakes. Brakes became engines. Engines became everything. Through the Depression, the war, the post-war boom that turned Tucson into a real city, and every technological shift from points and carburetors to on-board diagnostics, the shop stayed on the same corner and kept doing the same thing: fixing whatever came through the door.

Nearly a century at one address is the part nobody else in Tucson can claim. Chains arrive and leave. Independents open and close. We have been here through all of it, which is why three generations of South Tucson families have brought us their cars — often the grandparents first, then the parents, then the kids with their first beater.

The short version of a long history

1927

McElroys opens as a neighborhood tire shop at 2104 S. 6th Ave., serving what was then the edge of Tucson.

THE DECADES AFTER

Tires give way to general repair as cars get more complicated and the neighborhood grows up around the shop. The address never changes.

TODAY

A full-service shop with ASE-certified technicians, a nationwide warranty, and 1,013 reviews averaging 4.9 stars — still independently owned, still on the same corner.

A note on the 1984 listing

Some local directories list McElroys as founded in 1984. That is incorrect and the owner is having it corrected. The shop has operated at 2104 S. 6th Ave. since 1927.

What we believe about this job.

Tell people the truth, including when it is cheap

The fastest way to lose a customer for a generation is to sell them something they did not need. We would rather tell you the pads have 10,000 miles left and see you in a year than book the work today. Over 99 years that arithmetic has worked out.

Quote before the wrench

You find out what it costs before we start, not when you come to collect the car. If we open something up and find it is worse than it looked, you get a phone call and a decision, not a surprise on the invoice.

Speak the customer's language — literally

We are on Tucson's south side and we always have been. Se habla español is not a sticker on the door here; it is how a large share of our conversations actually happen. Explaining a repair badly in someone's second language is not explaining it at all.

Old cars are not a sideline

Being the official classic car mechanic of The Drive Tucson is something we are genuinely proud of, but the deeper point is that we never stopped doing this work. Carburetors were current technology when this shop was already decades old. See the classic cars page for what that means in practice.
